Former Senate President honoured for contribution to health care
Former Senate President Alfred Oughton who produced perhaps “the most authentic” report on the Island’s health care system was today honoured with a Salute to Service Award by the Bermuda Health Foundation.Mr Oughton, who is recognised for his “legendary fairness, candour and humour”, served in the Senate for 15 years. He was elected Senate President in 1998 and held the post until his retirement a decade later.At an awards luncheon today, Mr Oughton was praised “for his stellar work in the community” and for producing an “exemplary Health Care Review Report” in May 1996. The report became known as The Oughton Report.Bermuda Health Foundation chairman Philip Butterfield said the review was considered by some “to be the most authentic review of Bermuda’s health care system to date”.Mr Oughton also served as the chair for the Health Care Review Sub Committee in 1993 after being appointed by former Health Minister Quinton Edness.The appointment was made “in response to community concerns regarding the escalation of health care costs and the quality of health care afforded to residents in Bermuda”.
