Tourist fined for importing cannabis

A US cruise ship visitor was fined $2500 in Magistrates’ Court today after he admitted bringing cannabis into Bermuda.Michael Montelli apologised to Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner.The 36-year-old said he took the ten grams of cannabis onto the ship for his own use.He added that cannabis was decriminalised in his home state of Connecticut.Police were called by Bermuda Customs to a cruise ship in Dockyard on Wednesday.A partially-smoked quantity of cannabis, weighing ten grams, was found in Montelli’s cabin.After warning him that the offence carried a maximum sentence of ten years’ imprisonment at his court, Mr Warner fined Montelli $2,500, to be paid forthwith.
