‘He went to rape and kill’

A family has spoken of their horror after a masked burglar broke into their daughter’s home with condoms, masking tape and a Taser gun.The Pembroke family believes the man, a next door neighbour, intended to rape their adult daughter while her two young sons aged nine and 11 were in the house.Last night, they spoke to The Royal Gazette about the ordeal which unfolded at a home on Middle Town Lane around 3.45am on Monday. According to family members, the woman awoke in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom when she was confronted by a man dressed in all black. The woman screamed out, but noticed the intruder had a stun gun and other weapons in his possession. Her boyfriend came to her aid and a struggle ensued between the two men.Family members said the boyfriend eventually knocked the man unconscious and upon taking off the burglar’s mask saw it was a 33-year-old neighbour. The man was said to have ‘Rough Rider’ condoms, a knife, stun gun, kitchen pot, masking tape and gloves in his possession.“The burglar didn’t go to steal, he went to rape and kill,” said the woman’s aunt. Speaking on behalf of the traumatised family, she said the two young boys were having trouble sleeping and didn’t want to return to the house anymore. She said her niece was also very shaken and in need of counselling to better cope. The intruder is believed to have been waiting in the downstairs section of the house and the family believe, by his arsenal of weapons, he intended to cause her serious harm. The nine-year-old, who was awake when the burglar attacked his mom, spoke briefly of the encounter. He said: “I saw him walking up the stairs and I put the covers over my head.“I tried to get the phone to call my mom and afterwards I heard all this noise and I saw all these lights and saw the burglar and my mom’s friend rolling down the stairs and fall over the wall.“I was scared and I’m still scared to go into the bathroom by myself. I can’t sleep and I don’t want to go there [to the house] anymore,” he added. The family is also upset the woman’s boyfriend was arrested and put in jail after trying to defend the household. A family friend called it a “slap in the face” when a victim who is protecting his family and his home is then made to appear in the wrong. “The family haven’t even started dealing with it. The victim [the woman’s boyfriend] goes to jail and it wasn’t even like he was going to give a statement.“Not only did he get arrested he had to spend two days in a cell and then got police bail. How does that happen?”A Police spokesman would not comment on the man’s arrest, but said last night that inquiries into the incident were still ongoing. Police released the following details about the attack: “Around 3.45am on Monday, police attended a reported burglary at a Middle Town Lane, Pembroke residence. “Details about what occurred are unclear at this time; however it appears that an unknown intruder gained entry into the home and was confronted by a male occupant. The intruder was still in critical, but stable condition last night.
