Preserve social contract
June 20, 2011Dear Sir,In most western democratic countries, the implied social contract is the glue that holds society together. This implied contract between the people and the government guaranteeing the social and economic services to Bermudians is showing stress. The social economic and political risk to Bermuda if the social contract is broken will endanger the new democratic reforms of the last decade marked by the PLP victory in 1998.If the social fabric of our country breaks down as a result of inept policy, history shows that hurt and angry people will hold the individuals within the ruling political parties who are in charge accountable by revolution. It is absolutely correct for the Premier to get the system on track again and restore confidence in the system and its management. “Walk the walk” is now more than ever more important than the “talk”.The social contract with the people of Bermuda must be preserved at all cost.MICHAEL A MARKHAMSmith’s
