Hundreds of blood donors needed

The Bermuda Blood Donor Centre is marking World Blood Donor Day on June 14 by calling for at least 900 new donors.Susan de Verteuil, pathology nurse at the centre, said there are currently about 1,100 donors in Bermuda, or two percent of the population. The centre wants to see their numbers increase to “at least 2,000”, she said. Blood is not imported and blood supplies are dependent upon local donations, which are one-third the number found in other developed countries.According to the centre, only a small number of Bermuda’s under-25-year-olds opt to give blood, compared with 38 percent in other jurisdictions. Corporations are being called upon to support staff members who donate. Earlier this year, a three-month blood drive at Riddell’s Bay Golf Club generated 80 new blood donors.Chartis Insurance has chosen to give a day off to any employee who donates three times a year, and Hott 107.5 radio is raffling off monthly prizes to those who donate and mention the station’s name during June, July and August. An educational display on giving blood will go up in the King Edward VII Memorial lobby from June 14. The Bermuda Blood Donor Centre on the hospital’s first floor holds clinics every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8.30am to 3.00pm.Useful web link: www.bermudahospitals.bm.
