Stand Up Bermuda plans clean up of violence-hit neighbourhoods

The group Stand Up Bermuda, led by ex-gangster Jahma Gibbons, plans to clean up litter in Pembroke neighbourhoods hit by gang violence.“Our aim is to show people in the area that other people care about their neighbourhood, and to get some of the guys hanging out there to help us,” Mr Gibbons said of the one-day event, scheduled for June 18. He said the cleanup had been organised in conjunction with Keep Bermuda Beautiful, which has offered to provide supplies for collecting trash. We’ll be cleaning up along the Glebe Road and St Monica’s, Bishop Spencer Road and down Pond Hill. It depends on how many volunteers we can get.“If we can get enough people involved, we’ll clean up down Parsons Road and up around the Curve,” Mr Gibbons said, referring to Curving Avenue. “Anybody who wants to come along can help. Guys who are in so-called gangs can join us for it, and afterwards we’ll have a barbecue as a show of our appreciation.”The cleanup will begin at 9.30am from Pig’s Field Park, near Bandroom Lane, where the barbecue is planned to start at 12pm.Stand Up Bermuda, an anti-violence group which swiftly attracted thousands of supporters from a Facebook page, was split by internal disputes last month, leading other organisers to separate under the name Together for Bermuda.Asked about the split, Mr Gibbons said: “We’re all going forward. We’re going our own ways but continue to do our thing for Bermuda. We’re both in this for the same reasons.”Useful web links: www.standupbermuda.org, www.facebook.com.
