Joint Regiment, Police operation praised

Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief congratulated the Bermuda Regiment and Bermuda Police Service on a joint maritime operation conducted over the Bermuda Day holiday. The operation saw four soldiers attached to the Bermuda Police marine section for eight hours to assist in patrolling the local waters. They are all members of the Regiment boat troop and qualified and experienced boat handlers who have recently returned from training with the US Coast Guard in North Carolina.Mr Perinchief said: “This co-operative effort between the uniformed services demonstrates the effectiveness of cross-training and the importance of a unified approach to national security.”His comments came as the two services continue a memorandum of understanding from 2010, which will see the Regiment assist marine police through the summer months.Last summer was the first time the two services performed a prolonged joint maritime patrolling operation. According to a Government press release, they conducted a successful night-time search and rescue operation where they located and saved a distressed young man. They also provided maritime support to an aircraft crash exercise at LF Wade International Airport.Lieutenant Colonel Brian Gonsalves, Commanding Officer of the Bermuda Regiment, said he was very pleased with the joint operation and hopes to see the two services working together more frequently.“The Regiment’s role is to support the public of Bermuda and this is a very good example of how we achieve this. I am fortunate to have such dedicated and enthusiastic young men and women in boat troop who will answer the call when needed. They constantly train through the year so they can respond to any situation that demands their expertise.”Lt Col Gonsalves said the Regiment is currently looking for volunteers and can offer training in a variety of trades including medical, signal, Regimental Police, rifleman and musician.Anyone interested in training with the Regiment should e-mail Major Warren Furbert, FurbertWarren[AT]gov.bm, or call 238-1045.
