Marathon rethink needed

May 19, 2011Dear Sir,I was disappointed in the decision to open the Bermuda Day Half Marathon to tourists as it will eventually reduce the banter and anticipation of the local rivalry enjoyed by the top runners and spectators. However, I recognise the need to do absolutely everything we can to compete in the tourism industry, and so I can reconcile to the idea of broadening the event.Unfortunately, the current decision to allow tourists to compete but to disqualify them from receiving awards is likely to do more harm than good (worse is the suggestion that they start 20 minutes late). It risks the awful perception that Bermuda does not welcome or appreciate tourists. If we are going to invite tourists then let's fully embrace them with our Bermuda hospitality they should be eligible for the top awards and more perhaps even extend recognition to the winners from each continent.I'm less worried about those tourists who will enter this year and may perhaps become educated as to the background of why only locals receive awards. The greater concern is the infinite number of tourists in the future who will view our rules on-line or elsewhere and simply think it odd that tourists are treated as an underclass most will simply never know why, they will not come, and a harmful perception will perpetuate.Let's either keep the local tradition or fully embrace our valuable tourists.JONATHAN REISSPaget
