Truckers to discuss illegal activity
Bermuda’s truckers are scheduled to meet tonight to discuss illegal trucking activity, and how to stop it.In a notice to the public, vice president of the Bermuda General Truckers Association Carlton Smith wrote that the Association will be working to stop those breaching trucking regulations.“The Trucks Advisory Committee has assured us that the regulations will be enforced,” Mr Smith wrote.Earlier this year, Richard Foggo, president of the BGTA, met with Transport Minister Terry Lister about owners of large private trucks, such as landscapers and carpenters, using them to transport large items like furniture for cash.Another issue, according to Mr Foggo, is the use of tractor-trailer dumpsters for transporting sand, soil and gravel, contrary to the Motor Car Act.Mr Smith has said while a permit for a private truck costs $3,000 or less, a permit for hire, required for general trucking, costs $80,000, meaning any loss of business can significantly affect a trucker’s bottom line. The BGTA meeting will be held at 7pm tonight at the Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club. Any attending members need to be current, with membership dues currently set at $50.
