Players’ Games warm-up

Some of Bermuda’s best squash players will put themselves through an intense three-day competition this weekend as they warm up for the Island Games and the Junior Caribbean Championships.A total of 64 men and women will compete in the World Distributors Bermuda Tyre Charity Squash Tournament, which starts today. The likes of Micah Franklin, Chris Stout, Laura Robinson and Juliette Ferrari-McComb will be using the event to prepare for the Games in the Isle of Wight. In the junior contest the –Island’s best youngsters will be battling for position to force their way into contention to be picked for the Caribbean Championships which are being held in Guyana in July. For Franklin the Championships represent a last chance to prove that he is the region’s top young player. Expected to be the number one seed at the Under-19 level, Franklin finished second last time out. Also expected to return will be Noah Browne, who won the individual Under-17 event at a tournament in which Bermuda’s girls finished third and the boys fifth in the team competition.First, though, Franklin will be looking to come through a hectic weekend which would require him to play four games in two-and-a-half days if he reaches the final.Whatever happens there will be a new champion as last year’s winner, Nick Kyme, is unable to defend his title, so Franklin, Patrick Foster and Andre Mount are all expected to fight it out in the men’s top division.Once again the women’s top flight is expected to be dominated by Liz Martin and Denise Kyme, although Australian Magda Cawthorne, who is here on holiday, could unsettle that division. The finals are scheduled for Sunday afternoon, with the women’s due to be played at –2.40 pm and the men’s taking place at 3.20 pm.
