Beard steps down as Anti-Doping chairman

Jon Beard is being forced to step down from his role as chairman of the Bermuda Sport Anti-Doping Authority.Beard is having to break all ties with the BSADA because the Island’s new doping act bars anyone with commitment to another sporting body from being on the authorities board. The new act left Beard having to chose between his role with the drugs body, and the Bermuda Island Games Association, of which he is also an integral part.In the end, Beard said the choice was a relatively easy one, and he felt that he was leaving the BSADA in a far strong position than when he joined at its inception in 1993 as the then Bermuda Council for Drug Free Sport.“I was left to chose between volunteering for BSADA or the Bermuda Island Games Association,” said Beard.“I have put a lot of time into both of these bodies.“However, the BSADA (formerly the BCDS) is now in good financial shape, solid funding, offices, and a permanent staff of five, a far cry from the one-person part-time staff we started with.“The Bermuda Island Games Association however is still completely volunteer based with a constant demand to find adequate funding for the exciting community project that it is. Thus, the immediate need is that of the Bermuda Island Games.“The 2011 Games on the Isle of Wight are almost upon us, and the 2013 Games to be hosted here are getting ever closer. “BSADA now has strong base as a government quango and will definitely serve the sports community well.“The BIGA can help hugely to develop young sports people on the island, develop national pride and bring people together - and so I will increase my efforts there.“Additionally, I can help in any other sports capacity I might wish to without falling foul of BSADA rules.”
