Three face drop in reshuffle

David Moore

The battle to survive in the Premier Division this season just got a little bit tougher, Bermuda Cricket Board said last night that three teams will be relegated at the end of this season.Among a raft of changes to the Island’s 50 overs competition that the BCB announced yesterday, there will also be the introduction of a new points structure for the league, while the top flight will be cut to just six teams.Only one side will be promoted from the First Division this season, and in future years, promotion and relegation will be limited to the bottom team in the Premier Division and the top team in the First. Other spots will be decided via a play-off at the end of the season.Of a more immediate impact is a new bonus points system that it is hoped will improve the standard of cricket across the Island, and by extension, the national team. This season, sides that can bat for 50 overs will earn a bonus point, and there will be other points available for scoring a certain number of runs, and for sides that have 100 partnerships in their innings.“It is important that the domestic structure better prepares our cricketers for the international games which are becoming more and more competitive,” said head coach David Moore.“The purpose of the new bonus point structure is to identify and reward performance areas that have been lacking in recent Bermuda cricket teams’ performance at International level.“It was decided that batting partnerships of 100 runs, the ability to bat for the full 50 overs and setting targets of 250 plus were areas that bonus points should be allocated.“In the discipline of bowling it was decided to utilize the bonus point system to encourage aggressive bowling to dismiss teams within 30 or 50 overs, to encourage skilful fielding through rewarding the successful execution of run outs and the decrease in bowling wides and no-balls.”
