Ellis backing Wells to prove Carlisle boss wrong
Nahki Wells has been backed to prove Carlisle United manager Greg Abbott wrong after being released by the English League One side yesterday. The man who recommended Wells to the Cumbrians, Mark Ellis, insists the Bermuda striker wasn’t given a “fair chance” by Abbott and reckons it was a mistake not to offer him a new contract.Ellis, a former Bradford winger, believes Carlisle’s loss will be another club’s gain, with two lower league sides already expressing an interest in the 20-year-old.“I’m a little disappointed to be honest. My impression was they were going to give him a new contract and loan him out,” said Ellis, who coached Wells at the International Academic Soccer Academy in the UK.“I don’t think he had a fair chance and I hope he goes on to prove them wrong.“I’ve spoken to one club today who want to have a look at him and I know a really good non-league club who are desperate for him.”Wells signed a short-term deal with United in January but was used sparingly by Abbott, making just three substitute appearances during the second half of the season. The ex-Dandy Town player was left out of United’s squad for their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final victory over Brentford at Wembley but Ellis is confident yesterday’s career set-back will only serve to make Wells stronger.“A lot of players have been let go by clubs only to go and do great at other clubs.“Hopefully it will be character building for him and make him want it even more,” said Ellis, a former team-mate of Abbott.“Nahki’s only 20, he’s still unproven and you never know what’s around the corner. We all know he’s got a lot of talent.”Abbott, who also released young striker Ryan Bowman yesterday, described Wells as a “hard worker” and a “pleasure to have around”.“It’s always horrible to have to tell a young man that he won’t be getting a contract.“It’s even worse when it’s a genuine and likeable lad like him,” said Abbott.“What we have had to do is look to next season and make a decision, however tough that may be, and the decision on this occasion is that we have to let them move on.“Wells is a very hard worker and a pleasure to have around, but sometimes you have to do what you think is best for the players involved and for the club.“We will make sure that we do everything we can to help him find something else, and he will go with our very best wishes.”
