TV quiz show to test residents’ knowledge of music and songs

Quiz creator: Ric Chapman is the man behind the new music trivia show Songopoly.

Songopoly, Bermuda’s first TV game show, hits the airwaves tonight.Creator Ric Chapman believes it will be a great hit, and is intent on taking the show overseas.“Songopoly is a game show about our knowledge of music,” Mr Chapman said. “We all love music, and portions of songs get stuck in everyone’s heads wouldn’t it be great to turn that into money? The show isn’t just about lyrics, it’s about all the trivia associated with the music as well. The show will cover all types of music, not just pop; there will be classical as well.”A native of Australia, Mr Chapman said the idea came to him after he arrived in Bermuda with his family one year ago.“My wife had been offered a job here, and I had to spend about eight months sitting on the sidelines. But it proved to be a creative godsend. I came up with a screenplay idea, then I designed a board game and the concept for the show came out of that game. I took the idea for Songopoly to Fresh TV and to VSB, and it got taken by both of them. It was all dreamed up here, on the beach at Warwick Long Bay.”The pilot can be viewed tonight at 8pm on VSB channel 11, and 7.30pm on Fresh TV.Artwork for the show has been provided by five students from CedarBridge Academy.“I wanted pictures of a selection of musicians going from Beethoven to Rihanna,” Mr Chapman said. “Because of copyright issues, I approached the school and ended up with these brilliant drawings, which will be used on the show.“Another of my proud moments for Songopoly came from talking to Reverend Cal Stone of Wesley Methodist Church. The church is going to sponsor a Christian question on each show, based on old hymns and spiritual music.”There is no amateur singing on Songopoly “just hands on buzzers”, Mr Chapman said.Over 300 contestants applied when the concept was advertised.“We’ll get more once it starts rolling,” Mr Chapman said. “Then we’ll try and sell this overseas. Bermuda can be proud that it started here.”The show will air over eight weeks and 24 episodes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
