Beat that! Proud Hayley Raynor, 10, sits next to the 10.5lb beet she helped to grow at her grandfather's garden in Southampton. The two gardeners have produced a bumper crop with several of the other large beets from their vegetable patch weighing around 8lbs.

Ten-year-old gardener Hayley Raynor has helped to grow a bumper crop of beets, including one that weighs in at a colossal 10.5lbs.She and her grandfather, Eldon Raynor Sr, worked together to grow the beets, several of which tipped the scales at around 8lbs.“We’re going to give these away to our neighbours and our friends,” said Mr Raynor. “It’s good therapy for the mind and the soul.”Mr Raynor grows a variety of crops on a 30ft by 10ft garden behind Elbra Putting Greens, which he runs with his wife Barbara.“There’s nothing magic to it,” he said, explaining that the soil is fertilised with a mix of “cuttings from the carpentry shop and chicken manure”.“I till it into the soil about three, four times, let it break down and then plant the seeds,” he said.Hayley, who attends West End Primary School, helped tend the crops.“She’s always coming out into the garden with me, and she does cricket, soccer and ballet too,” Mr Raynor said.“We like to do what we can to keep fit.”
