Schools return for relay classic
Bermuda Pacers are holding their annual schools’ relay classic at the National Sports Centre this evening.Defending champions Berkeley Institute, T.N. Tatem and West Pembroke are all returning to defend their titles and battle it out for the $3,500 in prize money that will also be up for grabs.In all, 18 schools have entered teams for the 4x100m and 4x400m races that will begin at 5.30pm with the 4x100m semis, with the 4x100m finals ending the meet at 8pm.Four adult teams have also signed up with Bermuda Police, the Fire Service, and the Bermuda Union of Teachers all competing alongside Team Abiathar.Organisers are hoping for a big turnout, with many of Bermuda’s Carifta Games athletes, including Jeneko Place and Dage Minors, expected to take part.Wells in United’sCup winning teamNahki Wells’ Carlisle United reserves needed a half-time rocket from manager Greg Abbott to help them see off amateurs Netherhall and lift the Cumberland Cup.Abbott was furious with his fringe players’ performance as they struggled to break down the well-drilled part-timers from Maryport on Wednesday.United took nearly an hour to make the breakthrough, eventually winning 2-0 through Rory Loy’s penalty and a Paddy Madden strike.Coach Eric Kinder said: “The manager took centre-stage at half-time and there were a lot of aggressive words and home truths and rightly so.”Wells, 20, has made three first team appearances for United this season.Jones places fourthin Moonlight eventBermuda golfer Nick Jones took fourth place in the one-day Moonlight tour event played at the Falcon’s Fire Golf course in Orlando, Florida on Wednesday.He shot an even par 72.A day earlier he had placed second in another Moonlight tournament.Jones said that he had hit the ball really well but couldn’t get the puts to fall.The winner from Tuesday’s event, Paul Curry, triumphed again with a five-under par 67.Yesterday Jones was scheduled to play at the Timaquan GC in Florida, a two-day event on the Florida Players Tour, which he will use as a warm-up for his US Open Qualifier on May 19 at the same course.Seven teams innetball leagueSeven teams will compete for bragging rights in this year’s Bermuda Netball Association (BNA) Summer League, after the schedule was released yesterday.Taking part will be BMA, Works and Engineering, Young Men’s Social Club, Warwick Breakers, Family, Space Hoppers, and PHC Lady Zebras.There will be three games every league night, with one court hosting a double-header.Each game will consist of four 10-minute quarters, starting at either 6 or 7 pm..
