Bermuda Red Cross plans a series of fundraisers next month

The Bermuda Red Cross will be celebrating International Red Cross Month through a series of fundraising activities.The charity will host a grub day on May 13 students and staff at schools across the Island have been asked to donate $2 for the privilege of dressing in red and white.The Red Cross is also encouraging the wider community to do something in their home, school, office and neighbourhood to promote safety, health and preparedness.That same evening, the charity is to host ‘Lucky 13’ at Lido Restaurant at Elbow Beach, starting at 7pm.For $200 people can enjoy an open bar, three-course meal and gamble with tokens.The Kennel Boys band will perform and there will also be music by DJ Danger Don. There will also be a raffle and silent auction table.Ann Spencer Arscott, the charity’s director, told members of the Hamilton Rotary club, the event was aimed at educating people on the organisation’s different services, and recruiting volunteers.She said: “The Red Cross movement around the world is about people helping people and May is Red Cross month, with May 8 designated around the world as World Red Cross Day.“This year we are encouraging [residents in] Bermuda to be one in a million and volunteer, donate or do something to help someone else in their community.”In Bermuda, the Red Cross trains people in first aid and CPR, provides transportation to the elderly and rents hospital beds, cribs, wheelchairs, crutches etc to those in need.The charity also provides disaster and international relief, has recently opened a thrift store, and sponsors bi-weekly activities including fitness talks and guest speakers for seniors.Useful website: www.bermudaredcross.com.
