Swimmers smash local records at Carifta Champs

Ashley Yearwood: Reached the final of the 50 metres butterfly and set a new national record in the 100 metres in the same event.

Bermuda swimmer Jesse Washington dropped his best time in the 50 metres butterfly by six seconds at the Carifta Championships in Barbados yesterday.In doing so, the youngster took the national butterfly age group record from his Bermuda team-mate, Nick Patterson, and qualified for this summer’s CCCAN meet in Puerto Rico.He also made the final of the 100 metres butterfly in his first Carifta outing.Ashley Yearwood reached the final of the 50 metres butterfly to set a new Bermuda age group record, while Shannon Hassell dropped her time by a whopping 15 seconds in the 100 metres backstroke to book her place in the finals.Emma Franklin had a strong 100m backstroke, lowering her personal best time and reaching the finals in her first year in the top age group.Mitch Gariepy broke the national 400m individual medley record by 11 seconds, while Patterson set a new record in the 400m individual medley for the 15-16 year age group.On Saturday’s opening day of the Championships, Yearwood lowered the age group record in the 100m butterfly from one minute, 12 seconds to her new standard of 1:07.She lowered the time again in the finals finishing in sixth; a placing she repeated in the 50m backstroke.Patterson set a new age group record in the 100 butterfly while also making his qualification for CCCAN and Junior World/Youth Commonwealth Games.Gariepy shaved 15 seconds off his best 200m breaststroke time to qualify for the finals in his Championships debut, in a time of 2:59 to finish fifth.
