Education problems are a component of soaring crime, states Minister

Viewpoint: Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief

National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief stressed getting the education system right is vital to addressing the root cause of Bermuda’s soaring crime problems.Just four percent of people named education as the biggest issue facing Bermuda in a poll by Mindmaps at the beginning of this month, down from seven percent three months ago.Crime itself got 50 percent of the votes, with economy and unemployment next on 36 percent. But with Bermuda suffering four gun murders already in 2011 22-year-old Randy Robinson and 26-year-old David Clarke were shot dead in the past month Mr Perinchief said Government aims to tackle the underlying factors behind gang problems. He said in a statement: “The cycle of violence is not confined to criminal behaviour alone and so the decreased numbers of those concerned about education does not diminish the importance of that component in addressing the root causes and issues of which violence and anti-social behavior are symptoms.“The heightened sensitivity and concern about crime in Bermuda is understandable and the Government is keenly aware of and shares the concerns of the community.“With the Bermuda Police Service, we continue to implement strategies for efficient investigation, arrest of offenders and preparation for court proceedings.”Mr Perinchief has previously revealed he plans to launch a buy-back guns programme, rewarding people with thousands of dollars for handing in weapons, as well as introducing gang legislation.Shadow National Security Minister Michael Dunkley and Bermuda Democratic Alliance crime spokesman Mark Pettingill have both said Bermuda needs a change in Government to get to grips with increasing violence. The poll of 402 registered voters took place between March 29 and April 8 and has a margin of error of 4.9 percent.l Useful websites: www.gov.bm, www.plp.bm
