Enemies were real

March 16, 2011Dear Sir,In her “tribute” to the late Dr Barbara Ball, the Premier described her as someone who “tilted at windmills consistently throughout her life”. I was disturbed at that literary reference to describe such a selfless and important figure in this country’s history. The phrase “tilting at windmills” means attacking imaginary enemies. The enemies of the causes espoused by Dr. Ball were (some might say still are) real. Institutionalised racism, adverse and unfair working conditions, professional persecution and segregation were all attacked by Dr Ball. None of these were imaginary.I think an apology for this ill-suited reference to this heroine is in order. You, sir, correctly described Dr Ball as “at the forefront of the movement for equal rights for all.”A S SIMONSPaget
