Crowds gather for Easter service at Victor Scott
The Pembroke Community gathered on Victor Scott field this morning to celebrate Good Friday.Around 90 people attended the open-air family service, organised by One Community Unified, held on the school field where last year 35-year-old father Kimandae Walker was fatally shot while flying kites with his children.Several uniformed police officers stood in the crowd watching over the proceedings, while the Bermuda Police Service's mobile command centre remained parked in the school parking lot.Rev Nick Dill, leading the service, told the audience: “On this day last year this was the site of a dark event. We live in a dark world, there is no doubt about it.“But it is on this day that we remember that Jesus died for all of our sins, from the gang leaders to the bereaving family member.”Along with song and prayer, the ceremony featured reenactments of the crucifixion and the events leading to it, with Government Minister Michael Weeks and United Bermuda Party MP John Barritt both stepping up to take part.Following a prayer and blessing by Pastor Dwayne Simons, the audience was given codfish cakes and drinks. After the service, Rev Dill said: “It would have been great if we had more people, but looking around we have people from all across the area, which is good.“I think the message got across that no matter what happens, there is hope for redemption.”Useful website: www.community.parishofpembroke.com
