Destination Dockyard ‘rebranded’

Weekly summer street festival Destination Dockyard has been scrapped this year and replaced by Royal Naval Nights.Destination Dockyard had been organised by the Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the West End Development Corporation (Wedco) and Government. The Chamber announced last week that the event’s funding had been cut.At a press conference on Friday, Tourism Minister Patrice Minors described Royal Naval Nights as a “rebranding” that will be organised by Wedco and supported by the Department of Tourism, along with Royal Caribbean cruise line.“This year’s event will commence on June 27,” she said.“Spanning over 18 weeks, Royal Naval Nights will be a festival-type event with live entertainment comprising both local and cruise ship entertainers, traditional Bermudian vendors, food and drink stalls as well as our ever popular Gombey dancers.”Diane Gordon of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce said her organisation would focus its time and energy on Hamilton’s Harbour Nights and St George’s Old Towne Market this summer instead.“We were asked to put on something in Dockyard seven years ago to help support businesses in the area and that’s what we did,” she said.“I believe it was quite successful, and we believe it’s time to do something else. We are not events coordinators, we are here to help and represent our members.”She said the Chamber learned that Destination Dockyard was losing funding after they submitted their normal requests in March. In an open letter to Destination Dockyard vendors and stakeholders, Ms Gordon wrote: “Regrettably, we cannot run the event without adequate financial support and therefore will not be hosting the street festival in 2011.“We are made to understand that other events have been planned by Wedco for the West End and we therefore wish to advise you of our decision.“The Chamber of Commerce will be focusing its efforts on Harbour Nights and other areas of interest so we look forward to working on your behalf in other areas.”
