Hysterical proposal
April 11, 2011Dear Sir,The proposal by Mr Perinchief to pay the criminals and the gangsters a reward for breaking the law in the first place and having a gun should have the entire Island in hysterical disbelief. An amnesty, yes, that's pampering but it must be done. That we are unable to control this tiny island and get the guns off the street is tantamount to admitting we have failed.Saturday Night Live would curl up with jealousy to have such material. Perhaps Mr Barritt of the Not The UmUm show will make use of it.By the time all the guns are under lock and key in the safe keeping of the police and the financial rewards have all been distributed, the next shipment of guns will be on its way, and as we have seen will be guided mysteriously through Customs successfully. There is only one way to deal with law and order, and that is, so harshly that only a few would dare risk the penalty, and of those, it is best to let them choose their own way out. Other countries have eliminated crime under a rigid order, but in time when the whole world will be riddled with crime, if we don't get this evil under control on this lovely little island Bermuda, it's going to be too late. The time is now. Selling drugs should be the death penalty, for in reality you are selling death. For taking drugs it should be a mandatory treatment with no release for a period of time. Take the schoolchildren to see the worst prison once a year as a field trip, to truly see the horrors of that confinement, that would make a very deep impression on their future. We must change the laws to get the legislators to sit down together and be brave enough to bring in such harsh punisment for being self-destructive and harming and ruining other peoples lives, that in a year or two we could start to turn things around. It will not be quick or easy, but we must make a start to stop this denegration of all the things we hold most dear. Peace, health and freedom.DIANA WILLIAMSPembroke
