Man who stole phone cards imprisoned

A homeless man was sentenced to two years in prison for stealing phone cards from a gas station.Delvin Stevens, 42, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court last week to stealing 65 phone cards from the Collector’s Hill gas station on February 7, and escaping lawful custody a month later. At the earlier hearing, Stevens had told the court that he exchanged the stolen phone cards for food. While the court had heard that Stevens was on probation at the time of the offence, he repeatedly insisted that he had never been assigned a probation officer, causing Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner to delay sentencing so the matter could first be investigated. On Friday, the court heard that, due to an administrative error, Stevens’ probation period was not started when he was released from prison as it was supposed to.However, a report from the probation department said Stevens had not told them that he was supposed to be on probation.Mr Warner said: “One of the reasons you were placed on probation was that you could have some care, and you showed no interest in that.“Even bearing in mind the administrative error, I guess that is why you are in this position today.”Mr Warner sentenced Stevens to two years in prison for stealing and six months for escaping custody, with both sentences to run concurrently. The sentences will be followed by a two-year period of probation with any necessary drug and social treatments.
