Returned to sender
This letter was sent to the Post Master General and copied to The Royal GazetteMarch 24, 2011Dear Mr Outerbridge,On February 8, in Florida, I posted a birthday card to my 95-year-old mother-in-law, a resident at Westmeath Residential Care Home, on Pitts Bay Road.Today, March 24, the card was returned to me by your Post Office. The Post Office listed address, on your website, was exactly what was on the envelope except for the omission of a street number.I am quite certain that your mail carrier delivers daily to Westmeath, there can be few people in the Island who do not know exactly where Westmeath is. We appreciate your drive for efficiency but it seems a false economy to return overseas mail to the sender. This is the second time I have had mail returned to Florida. One could only hope, that seeing an overseas postmark the Post Office personnel might make a slightly better effort to deliver before sending mail back overseas. If I had sent a letter to you by airmail, addressed to Bermuda Post Office, Post Office Building, Church Street, Hamilton HM 12, Bermuda, omitting the street number, would your efficient personnel have “returned that to sender” too?Fortunately I had made a sizeable investment in flowers for this birthday, otherwise my dearly loved mother-in-law would have thought I had neglected to remember her birthday.I am sure I am not the only Bermudian who is very unimpressed by the arbitrary manner in which several Government departments seem to be run.MARGARET DYER FORSTERHamilton Paris
