Bus drivers take part in department’s first wellness day

Bus drivers got the chance to move from behind their steering wheels and stretch their legs at their very own health day.The Department of Public Transportation (DPT) hosted its first ever wellness day last week to promote the importance of healthy living. Workers were invited to get free health screenings for diabetes and hypertension, lung function tests, as well as eye and foot exams and even mini-massages.A car park at DPT headquarters in Palmetto Road was filled with stalls for the event, which was supported by the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Health. Organisations taking part in the wellness day included the Centre Against Abuse, Open Airways, Bermuda Hospitals Board, Bermuda Cancer and Health and The Foot and Ankle Clinic. Transport Minister Terry Lister said he hoped this event would be “the start of something really special”. He said: “We are always told to eat healthy, don’t smoke and exercise regularly and we have to start changing.“This is the first DPT wellness day and the anticipated first of many. In Government we’re serious about our staff being healthy and living long and productive lives.”Acting Health Minister Michael Weeks voiced his concerns about heart disease being the leading cause of death in Bermuda and the Island’s high obesity levels. He said: “The objective of today is to provide information to DPT employees to promote and encourage healthy lifestyle choices, so that everyone can live their best life.”As soon as Mr Weeks had helped to cut the ribbon, he was unexpectedly put through his paces by physiotherapists from the Bermuda Hospitals Board. They had him marching on the spot before a quick workout with elastic resistance bands.
