March 14, 2011Dear Sir,Tomorrow [Wednesday] the Senate will vote on the Tucker’s Point SDO, and the Senate and Bermudians should be cognisant of what is at stake when this vote is taken.l Bermuda and the world are struggling to overcome the deepest, most severe recession in generations. Bermuda’s economy and its future are at risk and now is not the time to constrain or discourage economic growth.l Tucker’s Point has had a major impact on the economy of this country and has contributed much in jobs and leadership in the tourism industry. The Resort should be allowed to grow to become an international beacon for Bermuda’s hospitality industry.l The Senate has the opportunity to send a clear message to the global investment community that Bermuda is open for business and welcomes investment in its hospitality industry. Those opposing the SDO are sending the message to investors that Bermuda does not need new investment and does not want growth. Nothing will threaten the livelihood of our children and grandchildren more than a vote that reinforces this perception.l Bermuda is incredibly fortunate that Tucker’s Point has been able to attract a hotel management company of the quality of Rosewood Hotels and Resorts. Rosewood will open new luxury markets and by extension will expose Bermuda as a quality tourist destination benefiting the entire tourism industry. It would be most unfortunate to send a message to the global travel industry that it was not welcoming Rosewood and other luxury hotel operators who may be interested in Bermuda. Global investors and operators who may be interested in new development in Bermuda, or even investing in existing hotels, including Newstead/ Belmont, are watching critically how the Bermuda Government deals with the Tucker’s Point requests.l Tucker’s Point and its investors have created that wonderful hotel and resort. I urge you to look at the quality of the Hotel and the care with which the residential components have been developed. The principals of Tucker’s Point have shown a huge commitment to Bermuda, that they are responsible people and that they respect the land. They will manage the new development sanctioned by the SDO with the same quality and care shown to date. The stringent conditions imposed under the SDO will provide the necessary Planning oversight so that our caves and endemic woodland are protected and, indeed, expanded with new reforestation plans.I urge our Senators to consider their vote carefully. Our environment can and will be managed and protected. The economic stability and growth of our tourism industry is at stake as are the livelihoods of many Bermudians who are dependant on that industry.PETER L.
