Five more athletes qualify for Carifta
Five more Bermuda athletes have qualified for next month’s Carifta Games.During a track meet at the National Sports Centre earlier this week under-17 athletes Victoria Clarke, Shuntae Henrickson, Zakiyyah Showers, Kyle Webb and Chas Smith all reached the qualifying mark.Clarke posted a time of 12.21 seconds in the 100 metres to qualify for the girl’s ‘A’ event, and 25.25 in the 200m to book her place in the ‘B’ race.Hendrickson will compete in the 1500m under-17 girl’s ‘A’ competition with a qualifying time of 5:12.62, while Showers finished the girls 1500m in 5:16.55 to meet the ‘B’ standard.Meanwhile, Webb qualified for the boy’s ‘A’ 100m (11.08), and long jumper Smith met the ‘A’ qualifying mark with a leap of 6.61m.A total of 11 athletes have now qualified for the Carifta Games which will held in Jamaica.The other qualifiers are Henry Stevens-Carty and Shaquille Dill in the under-20 boy’s 800m, Kyrah Scraders in the under-17 girl’s 800m and 1500m and Quasshie Douglas in the under-17 girl’s 1500m.Bruce Degrilla has qualified for the under 17 boys long jump while Karim Creary has booked his place in the under-17 boy’s 400m race.Bermuda will host next year’s Carifta Games. The Island last staged the event in 2004 which saw current world record holder Usain Bolt, of Jamaica, become the first junior athlete to break 20 seconds in the 200m in a time of 19.93 seconds. Last year’s Carifta Games were held in the Cayman Islands where Bermuda’s team finished fifth out of 25 nations.
