William earns top honour for being kind and helpful
In November 2010, following a vote by Year Six students at Warwick Academy, I was awarded the Young Citizenship Award for Warwick Academy Primary. The Young Citizenship is given to one Year Six student and one High School student from each participating school. All the Year Sixes had to vote for someone, other than themselves, who they thought was the nicest and most helpful in Year Six.They had to give reasons why the student should be given this award. For example, what nice things they had done, when they have forgiven someone that had done something bad to him or her and when they had stood up for what’s right. My teachers counted up all of the votes and then had a winner. We all went into a classroom and listened carefully for who won.I was very nervous because I really wanted to get the honour of being voted by my peers. When I heard my name being called by my teachers I was so excited.I walked up to the front of the room while everybody was clapping. I was so proud of myself. My teachers told me I would be going to a luncheon at the Hamilton Princess to celebrate the award and then I walked back to my seat. While I was doing this everyone was cheering me on and some people were saying, “I voted for you William, I voted for you!”On the day of the luncheon I was so happy. My mother came to pick me up from school at around 12. At 1pm that day we met my dad at the Hamilton Princess. My mom and I were very lucky to find a place to park our car because the Hamilton Princess was loaded with cars.We all went up the stairs to go into the ballroom and had a seat with Emma Dobson, who was the High School Warwick Academy Young Citizen, and her family. Joining us was Mrs Maria Woods (head of Primary at Warwick). We all had a great lunch and then it was time for the awards to be given. There were quite a few people getting acknowledged, but I waited very patiently. When they called my name, I walked up to the front of the room to get a certificate and an award while some of the reasons the Year Sixes voted for me were mentioned.A couple of days after the luncheon I brought in my award and certificate to school.Mrs Furbert acknowledged me again, but just to my class this time and they were all clapping. I was again so proud of myself. Getting this award has made me happy to know that being polite and kind is also recognised and I will try to be as nice as I can for the rest of my life.
