Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling said the City may have to delay or cancel future projects because of Government taking over the collection of Wharfage fees.While it was announced in the budget that the City of Hamilton would be given a $5 million grant, the Corporation had projected it would earn $6.215 million from Wharfage, which now goes to Government.However, the Government is also expected to start paying rent for the Hamilton fire station on King Street in the next fiscal year, giving the City an additional $660,000 in revenue.Mayor Gosling said: “Our initial reaction is one of disappointment in that the budget will have a greater negative impact on the City of Hamilton than expected.“The City’s 2011 budget was already extremely tight given Bermuda’s current financial situation, the reduction in revenues we experienced last year and already this year and a need to present a budget with some degree of balance.”He said the municipality would have to look at how it would continue to provide its services to the public but that a number of capital projects which do not immediately effect public safety, would have to be cancelled or delayed.While the Corporation had estimated wharfage to fall by 16 percent this year, it was still expected to make up around one third of the city’s budget.Mr Gosling said: “Given that the monies received from Government are less by one third from the estimated money the City was committed to by government in lieu of wharfage, this can have no other effect than cutting into our basic functionality.”Useful websites: www.cityhall.bm, www.gov.bm.
