Impressive Lewis is invited to train with Hammers
National academy youngster Amar Lewis has been invited to train with West Ham United's Under-13 team after impressing their coaches during this week's training clinic at BFA Field.
The Dandy Town midfielder was singled out by the Hammers Under-13 coach Mark Phillips as the most promising player at this week's camp and will head to the East London giants for tryouts later this year.
Phillips, a former Arsenal youth academy coach, said it would be interesting to see how the Warwick Academy pupil fared against the club's top players in his age group.
"Amar's got great balance and awareness.
"I think he's been playing within himself this week as he knows he's the top player and we now want to test him at the higher level," he said.
Mike Kelleher, from the West Ham's international academy, said if Lewis showed sufficient promise the club would keep monitoring his progress in Bermuda and continue to invite him back for training.
"I'm sure Amar is someone we will be keeping tabs on. The training clinic has gone very well this week and it's certainly given us some food for thought on how we can improve it for further years."
Bermuda Football Association (BFA) forged links with the Premier League team as part of a football development agreement earlier this year.
Derek Broadley, the BFA technical director, said Lewis could be joined at West Ham by fellow academy youngster Paul Douglas who has already been invited to train at the club.
"It would probably make sense to send them both at the same time.
"It's great for the national academy to have our best young players being looked at by a top club.
"It's important to point out we didn't recommend Amar to the West Ham coaches, they singled him out as a player they would like to have another look at."
Lewis also plays for the Florida Soccer Alliance (FSA) and has competed in the USL's SuperYLeague.
His father, Stephen Lewis, said his son had benefitted from training regularly with the BFA's national academy coaches.
"I think the national academy's very important, it's good to have that structure in place.
"I'm delighted for Amar and it will be a great experience for him," he said.
West Ham academy coaches Dave Hunt, an ex-Leyton Orient player, and James Meara, a former Watford professional, also travelled to Bermuda for the training clinic which saw more than a hundred young players turn out to improve their skills.
