Wesley Methodists donate to Salvation Army

A church has presented $1,000 to a Bermuda charity the latest in a long list of gifts to organisations on the Island and overseas.

The Missions Committee of Wesley Methodist Church presented the money to the Salvation Army earlier this week.

The charitable act was just one of many by the Hamilton-based organisation which in recent years has also made donations to the Women's Resource Centre, the Myanmar Project and the Sunshine League Children's Home.

Committee chairperson Mary Sumpter said the idea was to help wherever they could, whenever they could.

"Sometimes when people come to the church office for help, they are referred to the Salvation Army as they have facilities and programmes in place that Wesley does not have, and so we decided to make a donation to them," she said.

The decision to help the Women's Resource Centre was made after that organisation's executive director "Ms Kathy Harriott, came and spoke at one of the Sunday morning services", added Mrs Sumpter.

Wesley supports organisations that already have programmes in place to avoid duplication of effort.

During the Christmas season members of the church bought gifts for some of the children of the Sunshine League and gave one young adult a gift voucher to help furnish an apartment she was moving into.

The Missions Committee of Wesley Methodist Church has a two-pronged focus assistance is provided to organisations both here and abroad.

Last summer there was a special project for cyclone relief for the people of Myanmar, with $1,000 collected.

The previous summer, the Committee also raised $1,000, which was directed to children of Darfur.

And not only cash is given. At Easter and Christmas, the committee visits homebound church members with small gifts.

Next up is a Seniors Heritage Tea, planned for Saturday, May 2.
