Three groups with a vested interest in the fight against skin cancer have come together to raise awareness of the disease by putting on a volleyball tournament this weekend at Horseshoe Bay.

The World Health Organisation estimates that as many as 65,161 people a year die from skin cancer, which can be caused by too much sun exposure.

Coppertone, a leading sun care brand has partnered with Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre and two sports associations, the Bermuda Volleyball (BVA) and Bermuda Beach Tennis (BBT) to raise awareness and importance of proper skin care protection against the sun's harmful rays.

"In doing so, Coppertone is creating a fun beach event to promote the proper use of sun care products while having fun in the sun," said Farzanah Mohamed, marketing manager of BGA Wholesaler Distributor.

The day, on July 11 at 9 a.m., will consist of a Volleyball Tournament followed by a Beach Tennis demonstration, complimented with music and prizes all day long.

"The registration fee to play at this tournament is $40 per player with all proceeds going to Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre."

Representatives from Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre will also be at Horseshoe Bay with helpful information about proper skin care and cancer prevention.

Registration for the event closes today with a $40 registration fee, which will be donated to Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. Everyone is encouraged to come out, have fun and donate to a great cause.
