Back from the 'dead', UZIMON enjoys a new lease on life

UZIMON is seen here in meditation, as he steadies himself for his uzi lyrics.

It's a character that has already had more than one life six months ago UZIMON was 'shot dead' on a street in New York City.

His 'remains' were flown to Bermuda where he miraculously 'rose again' during the Fright Night Halloween festivities at Fort Hamilton.

Now with a new lease on life, as it were, UZIMON and his band have returned to the US where his mythical 'other life' continues, but an invitation for his new show, called 'The UZICAL', which takes place tomorrow at the Galapagos Art Space, Main Street Brooklyn, New York, says his life is once again in peril.

It says: "UZIMON and his band, freedom fighting musicians and fugitives from the law, elude authorities while taking over music venues coast to coast to spread their message.

"But as swarms of trigger-happy federal agents close in, could this performance be their last? And if so, will UZIMON ensure that his legacy is left behind, even as he faces the truth about his past? Join the Reggaelution (Reggae evolution) for an epic evening of roots rock reggae and dancehall musical comedy".

UZIMON, aka Daniel Frith, spared some time for The Royal Gazette for the Q&A below.

Q: Where did the idea come about for 'The UZICAL'?

A: It was my producer/collaborator Jon Legere's idea to be honest. He texted me one day and said, "oh, by the way, you're writing a musical for UZIMON and we're doing it at this theatre in Brooklyn and you've got two months'. And I was like, "why not?"

Q: Who wrote 'The UZICAL'?

A: I co-wrote the show with an actor friend of mine named Josh Barrett, who is the star of HBO's 'Generation Kill'. He also directed it. He has a great understanding of structure so was able to help me hammer my ideas into coherence. In the play, which features great live music from the band, UZIMON tells his story, faces his past, and clashes with the forces of reality.

Q: Who is the real UZIMON?

A: UZIMON is a character, not a real person, and a play/musical is a great vehicle for the character. Plus everyone in NYC and all over the world has a band, is in a band, etc. It was Jon's idea of a way for us to take this to the next level and do something crazy and creative and different and ignorant.

Q: How do you come up with your lyrics?

A: I choose an important topic, and write from di (the) heart.

Q: How is it that your lyrics are so paradoxical?

A: My lyrics are so paradoxical, because if they were not, it would be a paradox.

Q: Being Bermudian, how do you keep up with your Jamaican?

A: By reading literature.

Q: UZIMON has been compared to the British personality Ali G, so what do you think of Ali G?

A: He's Mug.

Q: What do you Daniel Frith, and UZIMON have in common?

A: Nothing

Q: When and why did you choose UZIMON as a moniker?

A: It was chosen for me, because I spit lyrics so deadly [like an Uzi submachine gun].

Q: When did you decide upon the beard?

A: The beard chose me. I did not choose the beard.

Q: What is its significance?

A: It's significant because it is UZIMON 's beard

Q: How did you go from actor to singer?

A: Me have never been an actor. Acting is for men in tights. I only act up.

Q: Did you think that becoming a singer would be easier than being an actor?

A: Being a singer is hard. So many groupies, so little time.

Q: I understand that you have quite a following in the US, how does that compare to performing in Bermuda?

A: Bermy audiences understand the Reggaelution (Reggae evolution) much better. American audiences need me to dumb it down.

Q: What are you most looking forward to at Friday performance?

A: Killing the crowd.

Q: What are some of the tunes that your local following can expect from you?

A: All the classics and a new tune about Edukashun (education).

Q: Where and when is your next performance?

A: The next one will be at Carnegie Hall.

Q: What is the toughest part of being on the road?

A: A lot of rest stops don't have toilet paper.

On the run: Uzimon and his band of freedom fighting musicians are incogito as they 'run' from FBI agents.
