An election battleground

Smith's North has long been a Progressive Labour Party seat, but it's one that the United Bermuda Party has had its eye on for some time.

PLP backbencher Patrice Minors' victory over then-UBP leader Michael Dunkley — by 536 votes to 444 — was one of the stories of the 2007 General Election.

Mr. Dunkley had vowed to steal Mrs. Minors' spot on Dame Lois Browne Evans old stamping ground but, after being aggressively targeted by the PLP during a bitter election campaign, ended up being mercilessly mocked on a miserable election night for the UBP.

Four years earlier, Mrs. Minors defeated Allan Marshall of the UBP by 481 votes to 358.

Mr. Dunkley, now the Opposition Senate Leader, is likely to return to fight that seat once again, and is said to have been canvassing hard in the area.
