Pat Gordon-Pamplin: 'I would like to still serve the people'
Opposition MP Patricia Gordon-Pamplin says she would want to continue serving her constituents — even if the United Bermuda Party "totally disintegrates".
But the Paget West MP told The Royal Gazette she still believes the UBP can bounce back and reclaim the five seats it has lost since the 2007 General Election.
All five MPs who quit the UBP cited frustration at the party's failure to reform into a viable alternative to the Progressive Labour Party.
On her own future, the Shadow Works Minister said: "Unless the party totally implodes, and I have no reason to believe it will at this point, I will certainly continue.
"I think, with me, if the party totally disintegrates, if there's zero support for the party, and constituents think there's something I still have to offer, I would like to still serve the people of this community."
However, she hopes such a scenario is not on the cards, explaining that the party has now regained focus since the internal squabbling that led to the resignations.
"Since the defections we have been focused on the people's business and not focused on other issues," she said.
"It's been more important to keep looking at the over-expenditure by the Government, trying to highlight to the Government that people are hurting. That's the fact that seems to have been missed. I think what we need to do is focus on the issues that are affecting people and continue to bring those to the attention of Government.
"Hopefully, constituents will be cognisant to what we are doing on their behalf."
And regarding the five seats the UBP has lost, she said: "I think if we put good candidates forward and allow the constituents to gain trust in the people that we put there, then I think we can win it back."
