Trott has not been sacked, says Scott
Somerset Cricket Club president Richard Scott has denied claims suggesting chairman Mark Trott has been sacked from his position just weeks ahead of Cup Match.
Speaking to The Royal Gazette yesterday from abroad, Scott said: "Anything is possible, but as far as I know Mark is still the chairman unless decisions were made while I was abroad.
"The vice-president (Lew Simmons) was left in charge of the club and I would like to think that decisions were not made of this magnitude in my absence."
Reports reaching this newspaper suggest Trott has already been given the pink slip by his superiors at the West End club and that long-serving member, Michael Corday, has emerged as a likely candidate to step in and fill the position.
Contacted yesterday, Trott was adamant that he is still chairman yet declined to speak on record, while Corday completely distanced himself from the matter.
It is understood Trott has fallen out of favour with Somerset players who have called for his resignation.
"We don't make decisions based on how our players feel," Scott stressed. "Any decisions that are made with chairmanship are based on internal decisions in the best interest of the club."
When asked will Trott oversee Somerset's Cup Match plans next month as cricket chairman, Scott said: "I don't know, I may not even be president at Cup Match.
"I don't determine how long I live while our members could also decide I am not to be the president for Cup Match."
Trott is a former Somerset Cup Match player who has also served as the club's senior football coach in the past.
Last week former Somerset Cup Match star, Ricky Hill, has been appointed as coach of the club's Cup Match team.
Scott, meanwhile, also moved swiftly yesterday to quash claims that Jacobi Robinson is to be replaced as Somerset's Cup Match skipper this year.
"He will be fine and I have every confidence in Jacobi that he will develop and become the captain that we envision," he said.
"We certainly have plans for him to captain the team (Somerset's Cup Match team) this year."
Robinson's leadership qualities have come into question in recent weeks and it is understood club executives are to meet to discuss whether or not he should remain in the key position.
"You have to understand that Jacobi is a young captain and has stepped into a leadership position that will require some guidance and experience," Scott added.
Among those being touted as a potential candidate for the post is former skipper Janeiro Tucker who was captain when Somerset were dethroned as champions at Wellington Oval in 2005.
