Trevor Todd launches retrospective show

Artist Trevor Todd with his works for his retrospective that opens at the Bermuda art Centre at Dockyard on Sunday evening.

Most artists have retrospective exhibitions after decades of painting Trevor Todd is having his after three years and it opens on Sunday at the Bermuda Art Centre at Dockyard.

The benefits of having this retrospective says Mr. Todd is that it gives members of the public who haven't previously seen his work a chance to view it. "It will give people a chance to see the work in completion."

Most artists have retrospectives with a body of work that has spanned decades of work, so when asked about having a retrospective after only three years, Mr. Todd said: "Like I told you, I'm just learning what this art thing is and learning now what retrospective means.

"One person said, 'aren't you too young to be having a retrospective?' I didn't have an answer to that. What am I supposed to say, because this is what was presented to me. So I said, 'OK, let's do it'.

"People say that people that have been doing it for 25 years have retrospectives. People are saying that's going to be kind of interesting. But the only thing I like to do is art and if I have the opportunity to do that, then I am going to do that."

Mr. Todd debuted at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art three years ago to rave reviews. "I am finding out that it is a lot more than I thought it was going to be and now the world of art is opening up to me a whole 'nother consciousness to who I am.

"I'm taking the ride. Wherever it is going to take me, that is where I am going to go, because I never imagined these things would take place for me in my life at all.

"I am meeting a lot of nice people. I have had a lot of good conversation and suggestions from people. As I am looking back in time, I think 'boy'."

He got his first show at Masterworks by accident, as his cousin and uncle Roby Rogers and Roby Sr. of Bermuda Sign Painters were due to show at the gallery, but pulled out unexpectedly.

They suggested that Mr. Todd speak with Tom Butterfield, director and founder of Masterworks, and after seeing his works, Mr. Butterfield, offered the unknown artist a solo show.

From there he had a week-and-a-half to be in the gallery and he said: "The rest is history. It's been interesting, it's been very fast and furious."

The show opens on August 16 to 28 from 5.30 p.m. until 7.30 p.m.
