Covid-19: advice to cancer patients

Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre has restricted services and delayed appointments as a result of the Covid-19 crisis.

Lynne Woolridge, the CEO of the charity, said: “Our cancer patients are vulnerable to Covid-19. For this reason, we are committing to increased precautions.

“By limiting exposure to known and probable risks associated with the spread of Covid-19, we hope to contribute to the containment of this disease in Bermuda.”

Opening hours for non-clinical work will be reduced to 8am until noon, Monday to Friday, from next week.

For information on operating hours for clinical appointments, visit chc.bm for updates or call 236-1001. Screening services have been postponed, including annual mammograms and bone densitometry appointments.

Ms Woolridge said that would be re-evaluated weekly and patients would be contacted to discuss any questions they might have.

All diagnostic appointments will continue as normal.

Patients and supporters were asked not to visit the centre, unless they have a confirmed appointment or delivery.

Everyone who does enter will be subject to screening questions and anyone with symptoms of illness should call 236-1001 before they enter the building.

Employees whose physical presence is not essential are moving towards remote working. Staff can be contacted on their personal e-mails or at info@chc.bm.

Ms Woolridge said the centre would continue to provide diagnostic imaging services and radiation therapy.

Appointments will be confirmed by centre staff and instructions provided for alternative building access for appointments outside the new temporary opening hours.

People with symptoms such as shortness of breath, fever, cough, or who have travelled in the past 14 days should call the clinical team on 236-1001 for diagnostic imaging appointments or 236-7035 for radiation therapy.

Volunteer shifts and all events have been cancelled until April 20. For further information, e-mail events@chc.bm.

Ms Woolridge said a decision had not been made on whether the Relay for Life event would go ahead on May 15 and 16.

However, Ms Woolridge told the public: “Relay For Life is more than just a 24-hour event. It is a year-long movement.

“So, we ask you not to waiver in your support; your $10 registration fees and the funds you raise throughout this Relay For Life season are still needed.”
