Wedding band recovered from Bermuda's waters
Bermuda truly is another world for a couple that has been reunited with their wedding band.
Amanda and Joe Burkholder were married on July 4 of this year and came to Bermuda for their honeymoon.
During this auspicious time they went diving and managed to lose their handmade and engraved John Christian wedding ring.
The couple thought that their ring was lost to them forever until they were informed that it had been found in Bermuda waters on a dive site.
Kevin Luton and Chris Haile of Dive Bermuda told The Royal Gazette about how they found the ring and what followed.
Mr. Luton and Mr. Haile had been on a dive with clients about four miles off shore on what is known as the north west end.
"We were diving with guests of the Fairmont Southampton and were only diving the North Shore due to the conditions on the South Shore, as Tropical Storm Bertha approached," explained Mr. Luton.
"We went to Constellation J, which was one of the shipwrecks used in the film 'The Deep' by Peter Benchley.
"It is a 192-foot wooden hull schooner built in 1918 and is just over 200 feet long. It is about 30 feet deep."
They also went to Montana J, which is located just 50 yards from the Constellation.
Mr. Luton added: "It is an English-built paddle steamer, which is 236 feet long and just waiting to be seen in only 30 feet of water.
"It was there that I saw the ring just sitting there."
After returning to the surface, Mr. Luton asked the tourists onboard if the ring belonged to any of them, but alas, it belonged to no one on the boat.
When asked if he thought he had found an artefact, he said: "No, the ring was clearly marked with the couples' names and the date of their wedding.
"Once we saw the markings of the jeweller too, Chris got straight on the case on our return to the shop."
The pair then contacted the jeweller John Christian, of Austin, Texas, and informed them of the names on the wedding band.
The jeweller then contacted the Burkholders and they in turn contacted Dive Bermuda.
Mr. Haile said: "They were overjoyed."
Mrs. Burkolder wrote: "This past week, we honeymooned in Bermuda and my husband lost his wedding ring snorkelling.
"John Christian Jewellers phoned to say that you found it. I can't even begin to fathom that!
"I can't believe you actually found it in the middle of the ocean! I thought for sure it was gone for good!
"I still can't believe it.
"Thank you for your integrity, and all the work you must have done to track us down. WOW!"
She then wished them good luck with Tropical Storm Bertha, which just passed the Island.
