OBA is off to a good start
The One Bermuda Alliance, the Island’s newest political party, is off to a good start with a comprehensive by-election victory that could signal a mood change in the electorate as we approach a general election. Some political pundits may dismiss the victory in Devonshire South Central as expected, since John Barritt, formerly of the United Bermuda Party, held the seat for so many years. However it would appear Mr Barritt’s switch from the almost extinct United Bermuda Party, to take on the leadership role of the OBA on an interim basis, was welcomed by his constituents. The OBA was made even stronger with the new face of Craig Cannonier as their first official Opposition leader, who has burst on to the political scene with an convincing ability to capture the attention of people across the country. Certainly he is fully aware that in capturing one hill in battle is far from winning the war.The OBA will have their work cut out for them as they launch their political efforts in areas where the Progressive Labour Party have been solidified for some years. However even those areas could become shaky since a rolling wave of discontent continues to sweep over much of the Island as a result of huge questions surrounding Government’s handling of the public purse in recent times. As a result of troubling issues on that matter, there is a drive to have a Royal Commission probe the numerous incidents where the public purse was used without full accountability. Although Premier Paula Cox has initiated steps to avoid this happening again, many feel someone somewhere should be made accountable. Those issues are not going to fade away.Massive job losses, a weakened tourist industry, questions over our international business, crime and gang problems are deeply troubling to most Bermudians. It will take more than fancy slogans and promises to get Bermuda back on course. To win the next election, the OBA will have to outline clearly what they hope to do for Bermudians on a number of issues. It is not impossible, but even they know it will be far from easy. The PLP, like most governments in power, will not relinquish control without a fight. That is to be expected in any democracy. The Premier has already stated she intends to make bold moves that might not please everyone. One can only speculate as to the real motive behind such moves, but it could indicate that she intends to send a message to her colleagues that she wants a tighter ship as a general election gets closer.Cabinet shake-ups with big names rolling could be the beginning of an attempt to restructure the PLP political base in order to compete with the OBA, who are gaining momentum and seem to be in it to win it.It will be a real test of how well these two political machines can tap into the undecided voting core of this country. Any type of negative distraction can be a hindrance in the world of politics. In the US, Republican front-runner Herman Cain is embroiled in allegations of sexual misconduct stemming from an incident in 1990, that has snowballed into a hot political potato. The matter has caused him to shift focus from his message, even though he denies having done anything wrong. The political arena can get nasty at times.Hopefully here in Bermuda, let’s hope the issues concerning the people will be always be the main priority. We have critical issues that need the attention of every talented person who desires a better country.Again it will be entirely a matter for the voters. They must decide whether Bermuda is moving in the right direction, or whether a change is needed. Democracy should be the tool for the people to have their say ...
