Foster takes title

Patrick Foster continued his domination of the Bermuda National Squash Championships, winning his fourth successive title on Saturday.

The club professional beat Bermuda's Nick Kyme for the second year running in a final that was even closer than the 6-11, 11-8, 13-11, 11-4 might suggest.

It was a day of mixed fortunes for the Kyme family, with Nick's mother Denise winning one final, and losing another.

Both former world tour professionals with rankings inside the top 65, Foster and Nick Kyme have played each other numerous times in recent years and know each other's game inside out.

Kyme took the first game as Foster's timing let him down at crucial points, and at 6-6 in the second game, Kyme looked like he might take a firm grip on the final.

However a couple of lose shots allowed Foster back into the match, and he drew level at one-game all when Kyme fired successive shots below the line.

The third game was the closest of the final, and Kyme again had chances to take the lead. Ahead 11-10 Kyme had a chance to take the game, but with the court wide open, he crashed his shot into the floor.

After that the game was as good as over, Kyme's concentration deserted him in the fourth game, and the mistakes he had been making at crucial moments early on in the final re-appeared as Foster took the game 11-4, and the final 3-1.

In the Ladies's final, Suzy Stones came from a game down to beat Denise Kyme 9-11, 11-3, 11-4, 11-4.

Denise Kyme had already beaten Liz Martin in the Ladies Veteran's final and seemed to pick up where she left off, storming into an 8-2 lead in the first game. Stones recovered and at 9-9 the game could have gone either way, but Kyme held on.

From then on Stones dominated, moving Kyme around the court at will, and as her older opponent tired, Stones took full advantage playing some clever shots to eventually claim the title.

In the day's other major final, Tony Prentice beat Richard Brewer to claim the Men's Veterans trophy.
