Squash squad celebrate victory in St. Vincent
Team Bermuda pulled off an upset at the Caribbean Squash Championships, beating the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) 4-1 in Saturday's final in St. Vincent.
The Islanders, whose team was made up of Patrick Foster, Nick Kyme, Robert Maycock, Micah Franklin and Chris Stout, had already breezed past Jamaica, Trinidad and Barbados en route to the mens' championship match.
Stout got Bermuda off to a good start against the OECS with a 3-0 win over Kevin Bailey before Kyme slumped to a 3-1 loss to Joe Chapman to leave the scores level.
Five-time national champion, Patrick Foster, then took on the unfortunate Joe Kniepp who won the first game before retiring injured because of a suspected muscle tear.
The game was awarded to Foster which restored Bermuda's lead.
With Bermuda leading 3-1, Franklin then overcame Kevin Hannaway 3-0 in the game's decisive match before youngster Maycock beat the experienced James Bentick 3-1.
Foster, who came third in the mens' individual event, said he was proud of his team-mates' performances.
"What a great feeling. I'm so proud of all the boys, each one of them have pushed themselves all week in very difficult conditions and every point was hard fought throughout," he said.
"We want to thank everyone at home for all the e-mails and text messages supporting us. It was great to know that everyone was so behind us. We are going to celebrate tonight, we've earned it."
Junior Caribbean Champion, Maycock, added: "It's a great feeling, we have been working so hard and it's great to get rewarded for our efforts. At various stages all of us pulled out a win for the team this week and it's just a fantastic feeling."
Franklin, who remained unbeaten throughout the competition, said: "I'm so proud of the guys performances over the past week, the support from the senior guys has been great. I'm looking forward to defending the title next year."
