Over the years St.George's Cricket Club president Neil Paynter has made a name for himself in the football arena as a hard tackling defender.

But last Saturday at Wellington Oval the ex-national team footballer showed he can also wield the cricket bat, thumping an unbeaten 31 batting at number 11 in a losing cause in a Premier Division 50 overs make up match.

Paynter was one of five St.George's batsmen reaching double figures and along with brother-in-law Gregg Foggo (51) he frustrated the Social Club attack during a 55 run tenth-wicket stand as the East Enders' tail wagged.

Andrew Richardson (20), Ryan Steede (29) and Makai Simmons (14) were the other St.George's bats who managed positive starts, but failed to convert them into big scores.

Jahmiko Marshall, nephew of Cup Match's all-time leading run getter Charlie Marshall, took three for 22 off only 6.2 overs to carry the Social Club attack, while fellow seamers Kani Darrell, Jaymo Durham and Nelson Bascome had two each.

In reply, Social Club overcame a wobbly start before an unbroken 61-run sixth-wicket partnership between player/coach Charlie Marshall (52) and ex-Bermuda Hogges player Dennis Zuill (32) sealed the visitors' hard fought win with 52 balls to spare.

Seamers Steede and Troy Hall claimed two wickets each for the hosts, who have remained in free fall since narrowly losing to Southampton Rangers earlier this summer in the Belco Cup final at Lords.
