Bermuda marathon hero 'Sir' Stanley is saluted
The memory of former well-known Bermuda Day marathon runner "Sir" Stanley George Burgess is being saluted by Government today as the annual Bermuda Day Half-Marathon Derby event approaches.
Mr. Burgess was born on September 10, 1901 and died on June 3, 1984 at age 82, having ran his last race in 1983.
He entertained Bermuda Day crowds with his well-oiled legs while wearing a white handkerchief around his head.
"We reflect on the spirit and the determination of this 'grand old man'," said a statement from the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.
Known as the "Iron Horse," many people bestowed the title "Sir" upon him due to his commitment to the marathon.
At 5 foot three inches, and of slim build, Sir Stanley won the Bermuda Day Marathon ten times and started running at age 20.
"We hope his legacy will continue to inspire dedication and determination for all runners of the Bermuda Day Marathon," the statement ended.
