Five rugby sides head to Cayman
Bermuda's youth rugby players head to Cayman tomorrow to defend their Conyers Cup title against their Caribbean counterparts, and Bermuda Rugby Football Union have chartered a plane specially for the occasion.
More than 120 players, coaches, parents, and supporters will leave the Island tomorrow afternoon on the Miami Air flight which has been paid for through a combination of sponsorship, fund-raisers, and players putting their hands into their own pockets.
Four youth teams – the Under-10s, Under-12s, Under-14s, Under-16s – will play a series of warm-up matches on Saturday against players from the Cayman Maples Community Rugby programme, before the real business of the Conyers Cup begins on Sunday morning.
And they will be accompanied by the senior national side who will play an IRB sanctioned game against the Cayman national side on Sunday afternoon, opponents they must also face in the North Americas and Caribbean Championships in November.
In fact the only age group not travelling on the four-day tour are the Under-19s who are busy preparing for the Under-19 Caribbean Championships in August.
Bermuda won the cup last year after winning the under-10 and under-12 matches, while Cayman won the under-14 encounter. This year there will be an Under-16 game as well, with Bermuda sending out a team from that age-group for the first time.
There is also much more than pride at stake in the senior game, with Bermuda naming a strong squad for a game which will count towards the Island's IRB World Rankings. Bermuda are currently ranked 57th out of 95 countries.
For those who haven't been able to make the trip to Cayman the weekend's matches will be streamed live on caymanrugbytv.com.
Sunday's matches start at 11a.m., Bermuda time, with the senior game beginning at –6.30 p.m.
