A former Police officer and educational therapist has been appointed Premier Ewart Brown's new Executive Aide.

Dale Jackson, 35, who formally takes over the $102,000-a-year role from Jamahl Simmons on Monday, told a press conference yesterday: "I think it's the opportunity of a lifetime. I'd just like to thank the Premier for the opportunity. I'm excited. It's going to be a challenge which I'm ready for."

Mr. Jackson is originally from Toronto and has lived in Bermuda for 13 years. He is married to a Bermudian, Sharita, and was a Police officer here for eight years.

His last job was educational therapist at CedarBridge Academy, where he worked mainly with students with anti-social behaviour. He has been captain of Bermuda National Basketball team for the past six years, leading them to win gold, silver and bronze medals in several international competitions.

Dr. Brown said: "He is as capable as he looks and he has a reputation for keeping his work in front of him and I'm delighted that he is joining us and we know that he will do an excellent job as Executive Aide."

Former United Bermuda Party MP Mr. Simmons, who defected to the Progressive Labour Party more than two years ago and became Executive Aide in February 2008, described his time with the Premier as a "fantastic ride".

Asked if he was returning to the political arena or the private sector, he replied: "A little bit of both" but declined to give further details.

Mr. Simmons lost out on a common councillor position on the Corporation of St. George after running in the municipal election on Wednesday.
