A new Deputy Commissioner of Police has been appointed, Government House announced last night.

Superintendent Mike DeSilva will take up the position tomorrow, succeeding Roseanda Young, who retired last year.

A selection panel chaired by Deputy Governor Mark Capes interviewed a number of candidates, all serving Bermuda Police Service (BPS) officers, earlier this month.

They agreed unanimously to recommend to Governor Sir Richard Gozney that Superintendent DeSilva be appointed.

Sir Richard said: "I am grateful to the Deputy Governor and his panel for their hard work in advising me on a critical appointment in the Bermuda Police Service.

"It was encouraging that there were a number of strong candidates for the job from within the BPS. I am confident that Superintendent DeSilva has the skills, experience, professionalism and determination to help lead the BPS forward to meet the challenges ahead.

"He is well regarded within the BPS for his unwavering dedication to policing. I call on the community as a whole to join me in wishing Superintendent DeSilva every success in his new role."
