Top English judge joins Bermuda Court of Appeal

Sir Robin Auld was senior presiding judge for England and Wales between 1995 and 1998.

A new Court of Appeal judge has been appointed, following the retirement of Sir Charles Mantell.

Governor Sir Richard Gozney yesterday announced that he has approved the appointment of Sir Robin Auld to replace him with immediate effect.

The Court of Appeal, which visits Bermuda three times a year to hear cases referred from the Supreme Court, is currently in session.

Sir Robin was called to the Bar at Gray's Inn in England in 1959 and became a Queen's Counsel in 1975. He was appointed a Recorder of the Crown Court in 1977 and became a judge of the High Court in 1987.

He was promoted to the Court of Appeal in 1995, and was the Senior Presiding Judge for England and Wales from 1995 to 1998. From 1999 until 2001 he reviewed the operation of the criminal courts in England and Wales.
