New fees for dumping waste will come into effect for commercial operators and haulers today.

The charges apply at the airport waste management facility and Marsh Folly composting facility.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Works and Engineering said: "The fees will initially be imposed as a minimum fee on a per load basis. When weigh scales are installed later this year, the fees will be set on a per tonne basis, as is currently the case at Tynes Bay Waste-to-Energy Facility.

"The disposal fee is intended for commercial operators and haulers and will not apply to minor amounts of material representing residential waste and delivered in private vehicles."

The fee is $20 per load at the airport and $25 per load at Marsh Folly.
